What Are The Differences Between Plastic And Cosmetic Surgeons?

The line between cosmetic plastic surgery and plastic surgery is thin, which causes confusion amongst patients. It is essential that you know the difference between these two types of surgeries before you decide to have one. Many people mistakenly believe that a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon are the same. There are huge differences between the training,Guest posting experience, expertise and credentials. There is a need for patients to be more aware of the value of credentials. I will attempt to clarify the differences between plastic and aesthetic surgeons.

*Plastic surgery and Cosmetic surgery: There are many fields of plastic surgery that have specialized areas, such as reconstructive surgeries, which restores any body part damaged by accident, birth defect, or burns. Cosmetic surgery is also included in plastic surgery. It involves reshaping tissues to enhance appearance.

*Training. A plastic surgery resident serves for at minimum 3 years as a surgical fellow after medical school. They are trained in every aspect of surgery. There are then 3 more years in plastic surgery. Plastic surgery training takes between 6 and 8 years. Cosmetic surgeons can come from any medical field. A cosmetic surgeon can be a gynecologist (or ENT surgeon), dermatologist, physician, etc. Cosmetic surgery is performed by doctors who have completed training from 1 year up to a few months.

*Plastic Surgery is a broad field. Plastic surgeons specialize in cosmetic surgery, craniofacial surgeries, burn surgery, microsurgery, maxillo facial trauma, and general surgery. Cosmetic surgeons are able to perform facelifts, eyelid surgery and tummy tucks as well as liposuction for breast enhancements, Rhinoplasty, etc.

*Certification – A plastic surgery should be certified through the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which is recognized by American Board of Medical Specialities. Only ABPS diplomates can call themselves a cosmetic surgeon. American Board of Cosmetic Surgery might certify a plastic surgeon but it is not recognized by American Board of Medical Specialties. All plastic surgeons are required to undergo rigorous training for 6-8 years. Both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery can be performed by plastic surgeons, but only cosmetic surgery.
